![]() ![]() The original PC AT used ST-506 drives (typically less than 80 MB) which were low-level formatted by using the PC set-up software supplied by the PC manufacturer. The information on low-level formatting with DEBUG had to be supplied by the disc controller manufacturer. If they are available you should try the manufacturer's utilities before using generic stuff from motherboard BIOS or general diagnostic utilities. This ensures that any special features of the drive are handled correctly. Manufacturer's utilities generally call a ROM built into the drive to perform the formatting function. Maxtor also had a similar utility for their drives. Seagate have an IDE low-level-format utility for their disks called SGATFMTx.EXE (where x is a version number) available at their web site. ![]() Modern Adaptec SCSI controllers (or more correctly "Host Adapters") generally give you a "Press CTRL-A" prompt during system boot to access the SCSI BIOS. Old Adaptec SCSI contollers were similar and were normally addressed at DC00:0000. This could be accessed from DOS using Debug. Debug used to be used with old ESDI controllers which had a ROM (nomally located at address C800:0000 containing disk utilities including low level format). You don't say what type of drive you've got. ![]()
